Volcanion, the mythical Fire and Water-type Pokémon, has finally made its debut in Pokémon Go, and trainers everywhere are eager to add this rare creature to their collection. Known for its unique dual typing and powerful moves, Volcanion is one of the most sought-after Pokémon in the game right now. If you’re wondering how to get your hands on this steam-powered beast, you’re in the right place. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from event requirements to battle strategies, all written in an easy-to-read, human-like style that flows naturally.

Before diving into how to catch Volcanion, it’s worth understanding why this Pokémon is such a big deal. Volcanion is the only known Fire/Water-type Pokémon in existence, giving it a rare combination of resistances and strengths. It shrugs off attacks from Fire, Ice, Bug, Steel, and Fairy-types while packing a punch with moves like Steam Eruption and Hydro Pump.

Its stats are nothing to scoff at either—with a max CP of over 4,000, Volcanion can hold its own in both raids and PvP battles. Whether you’re a collector or a competitive player, this Pokémon is a must-have.

How to Get Volcanion in Pokémon Go

The only way to obtain Volcanion right now is through the Pokémon Go Fest 2025 event. This global event, which ran from June 28 to June 29, offered ticket holders exclusive Special Research tasks that culminated in a Volcanion encounter. If you missed the live event, don’t panic just yet—there’s still a chance you can get it, though it might require some patience.

Step 1: Purchase a Go Fest 2025 Ticket (If Still Available)

During the event, trainers needed to buy a ticket from the in-game shop to access the “Full Steam Ahead” Special Research. This research was the only way to encounter Volcanion, as it doesn’t appear in raids, wild spawns, or eggs. If ticket sales are still open, grab one immediately—otherwise, you might have to wait for a future re-release.

Step 2: Complete the Special Research Tasks

Once you had the ticket, you needed to log in during event hours (10 AM to 6 PM local time) to unlock the research. The tasks weren’t overly difficult but required some effort, including:

  • Spinning PokéStops and Gyms
  • Catching multiple Pokémon species
  • Evolving Water and Fire-types
  • Hatching eggs and earning buddy hearts

Completing all six steps rewarded you with a guaranteed Volcanion encounter, along with other goodies like rare candy, stickers, and cosmetic items.

Step 3: Catch Volcanion

When you finally reached the encounter, catching Volcanion was a sure thing—no tricky catch rates here. Still, using a Golden Razz Berry and aiming for Excellent throws ensured you didn’t waste Poké Balls. Once caught, Volcanion was yours to keep, power up, and use in battles.

What If You Missed Go Fest 2025?

If you didn’t get a ticket in time, don’t lose hope. Mythical Pokémon like Volcanion often return in future events, though it might take a while. Past mythicals like Mew and Celebi were later made available through free Special Research, so keep an eye on official announcements.

Another option, though risky, is trading. Volcanion is technically tradeable, but only as a Special Trade, meaning it’ll cost a lot of Stardust and requires a high friendship level with the other trainer. Plus, not many players will be willing to part with theirs.

Is Shiny Volcanion Available?

As of now, shiny Volcanion hasn’t been released. Niantic usually rolls out shiny mythicals months or even years after their debut, so trainers will have to wait for future updates. When it does arrive, expect it to be part of another limited-time event.

How Good Is Volcanion in Battles?

Now that you have (or plan to get) Volcanion, how should you use it? Its unique typing makes it a standout in both raids and PvP.

Best Moveset

For maximum damage, run:

  • Fast Move: Incinerate (Fire) or Water Gun (Water)
  • Charged Moves: Overheat (Fire) and Hydro Pump (Water)

This combination lets Volcanion exploit its dual STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) potential, melting Grass, Ice, and Steel-types while also countering Rock and Ground threats.

Raid Performance

Volcanion excels as a Fire-type attacker, especially in Sunny weather where its Incinerate and Overheat get a boost. It’s also decent as a Water-type in Rain, though there are better pure Water attackers out there.

PvP Viability

In the Ultra and Master Leagues, Volcanion’s resistances give it an edge against common meta picks like Registeel and Togekiss. However, its weaknesses to Electric, Ground, and Rock mean you’ll need to shield carefully or pair it with teammates that cover those gaps.
