There’s nothing quite like having a hulking, unstoppable Golem by your side in Diablo 4. Whether you’re a seasoned Necromancer or just starting your dark journey, summoning a Golem can be a game-changer. These towering minions soak up damage, unleash devastating attacks, and even provide unique buffs—making them essential for survival in Sanctuary’s brutal battles.

But here’s the catch: unlocking and summoning a Golem isn’t as straightforward as casting a basic spell. If you’ve been scratching your head wondering how to get your own undead juggernaut, this guide will walk you through everything step by step.

Unlocking the Golem Summoning Ability

Before you can command a Golem, you’ll need to meet two key requirements:

  1. Reach Level 25 – Golems aren’t early-game minions. You’ll need to grind your way up to at least level 25 before the game even lets you think about summoning one.
  2. Complete the Necromancer: Call of the Underworld Quest – Once you hit level 25, this priority quest automatically appears in your journal. It sends you to the Fractured Peaks region, specifically the Shrine of Rathma in the northwest.

Step-by-Step Quest Walkthrough

  1. Pray at the Shrine of Rathma – Head to the marked location in Fractured Peaks, where you’ll meet a ghostly figure named Maltorius. He’ll task you with collecting 12 Unbroken Bones.
  2. Gather Unbroken Bones – Skeletons in the Sarkova Pass and Western Ways drop these. Elite skeletons hit hard, so watch out for their telegraphed attacks.
  3. Find the Bitter Cave – After collecting the bones, Maltorius directs you to the Bitter Cave (southwest of the shrine). Inside, you’ll find the Jar of Souls.
  4. Fill the Jar of Souls – Activate the jar and defeat the waves of enemies that spawn. Their souls will fuel the ritual.
  5. Complete the Ritual – Once the jar is full, Maltorius grants you the power to summon Golems. Congratulations—your undead titan is now yours to command!

How to Actually Summon Your Golem

Here’s where things get a little tricky. Unlike other skills, the Golem summon doesn’t appear in your skill tree. Instead, you’ll need to manually assign it to your action bar.

  • On PC: Open your skill menu (default key: S), then drag the Golem summon ability to an empty slot on your hotbar.
  • On Console: Open the skill menu, press L3 (PS) or the equivalent button to access skill assignment, then select the Golem summon from the list.

Once assigned, your Golem spawns automatically and stays by your side. If it dies, don’t panic—it respawns after 20 seconds.

Types of Golems and Their Abilities

Not all Golems are created equal. Depending on your playstyle, you can choose between three variants, each with unique strengths:

1. Bone Golem – The Ultimate Tank

  • Taunts enemies, redirecting attacks away from you.
  • Upgrade Options:
    • Corpse Generation: Drops a corpse every time it loses 20% of its health.
    • Thorns Boost: Gains extra health and reflects more damage.
  • Sacrifice Bonus: Increases your attack speed by 10% (but you lose the Golem).

Perfect for players who need a meat shield, especially in solo play.

2. Blood Golem – The Vampiric Bruiser

  • Leeches health from enemies, healing both itself and you.
  • Upgrade Options:
    • Damage Absorption: Takes 15% of the damage meant for you.
    • Healthy Buff: Gains damage reduction and extra damage when at full health.
  • Sacrifice Bonus: Boosts your max health by 10%.

Ideal for sustain-heavy builds, particularly against bosses.

3. Iron Golem – The Crowd-Control Powerhouse

  • Slams the ground, stunning enemies.
  • Upgrade Options:
    • Shockwave Attack: Every fifth hit unleashes an AoE blast.
    • Vulnerability Inflictor: Makes enemies take extra damage for 3 seconds.
  • Sacrifice Bonus: Increases your critical strike damage by 30%.

Best for aggressive builds that rely on burst damage and crowd control.

Customizing Your Golem for Maximum Efficiency

The Book of the Dead (accessed via Shift + C on PC) lets you fine-tune your Golem’s role even further. Here, you can:

  • Choose between two passive upgrades for your selected Golem type.
  • Sacrifice your Golem entirely for a permanent buff (great for non-minion builds).

Pro Tip: If you’re running a full minion army, invest in passives like Golem Mastery and Hellbent Commander to boost your undead squad’s effectiveness.

Combat Tips for Mastering Your Golem

  • Use the Active Skill: Pressing the Golem’s assigned hotkey triggers a special ability—Taunt (Bone), Life Drain (Blood), or Slam (Iron)—giving you tactical advantages in fights.
  • Switch Types as Needed: Fighting a tough boss? Try the Blood Golem for healing. Overwhelmed by mobs? The Bone Golem’s taunt can save your life.
  • Sacrifice for Power: If you’re not relying on minions, sacrificing your Golem for raw stats (like crit damage or attack speed) can be a game-changer.
