Inside The AI Hedge Fund That Rose 439% Before A Sudden $20 Billion Unwind
TwitterWhatsappLinkedin

For much of the past two years, few names in artificial intelligence investing attracted as much attention as Leopold Aschenbrenner. The former OpenAI researcher built a reputation after publishing a widely discussed essay predicting rapid advances in artificial intelligence, then launched a hedge fund bearing the same name as that essay. Investors drawn to the AI boom poured money into the venture as technology stocks surged, helping transform a small start-up fund into one managing tens of billions of dollars in assets.

That rapid ascent has now been followed by an equally dramatic reversal. A sharp decline across AI-related stocks forced Situational Awareness, Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund, into emergency discussions with lenders and investors as falling markets exposed the risks created by heavy borrowing and concentrated positions. Within days, the fund was seeking fresh liquidity, marketing private holdings and disposing of much of its publicly traded portfolio.

The episode has become one of the largest setbacks yet for an investment firm built almost entirely around the belief that artificial intelligence would continue driving extraordinary market gains. While the fund remains in operation, recent events have raised fresh questions about leverage, concentrated investing and whether enthusiasm surrounding AI-related assets had encouraged excessive risk-taking.

A Fund Built On AI Optimism

Situational Awareness was established in 2024 after Aschenbrenner gained widespread attention for an essay arguing that artificial intelligence would reshape the global economy within only a few years. According to accounts of the firm’s development, investors approached him after reading the paper, encouraging him to launch an investment vehicle focused almost entirely on companies expected to benefit from AI adoption.

The strategy attracted considerable attention during a period when semiconductor manufacturers, data centre operators, AI software developers and infrastructure companies were reporting rapid growth. As the broader market rewarded businesses connected to artificial intelligence, the fund produced exceptionally strong returns.

Reports indicate that Situational Awareness generated a net return of 439 per cent through June 2026. Those gains helped increase assets dramatically, while encouraging the firm to expand both public equity investments and private holdings linked to artificial intelligence.

The firm’s investments reportedly stretched across listed technology companies, AI infrastructure businesses and privately held firms developing advanced AI systems. Among the largest private holdings was Anthropic, a company that many investors viewed as one of the leading competitors in generative artificial intelligence.

At the same time, the fund increasingly relied on borrowed money to enlarge its positions. Borrowing allowed returns to grow faster while markets continued rising, but it also increased exposure to sharp declines once prices moved in the opposite direction.

Market Decline Exposed Risks

The recent sell-off in AI-related shares placed that strategy under considerable pressure.

According to reports, falling technology valuations triggered demands from lending banks for additional collateral or loan repayments. Those requests forced Situational Awareness to seek new sources of liquidity while reducing exposure to public markets.

The Financial Times reported that the fund approached investors and lenders seeking additional capital and also discussed selling assets directly from its portfolio. People familiar with those conversations described them as individual discussions rather than part of a formal fundraising process.

Subsequent reporting indicated that the fund disposed of almost all of its public long and short positions through a transaction involving another major hedge fund. CNBC reported that roughly two-thirds of the firm’s holdings were transferred in what amounted to a single large transaction.

According to The New York Times, Citadel eventually agreed to acquire much of the portfolio following discussions between Aschenbrenner and Citadel founder Kenneth Griffin. The transaction reportedly allowed Situational Awareness to avoid a broader liquidation while reducing immediate financial pressure.

Following the disposal, the fund continued operating with a portfolio largely consisting of private investments. CNBC also reported that stakes in private companies, including Anthropic, had been marketed to prospective buyers as the firm sought further liquidity, although no completed sale of the Anthropic position was confirmed.

Aschenbrenner later acknowledged the severity of the situation in a letter to investors, writing that the firm had disappointed clients while pledging to continue operating.

Leverage Magnified The Losses

Although declining technology shares affected many investment firms, leverage appears to have made the losses at Situational Awareness considerably larger.

Borrowed money allows hedge funds to purchase substantially more assets than their own capital would otherwise permit. During rising markets, leverage magnifies gains. During falling markets, however, the same borrowing can accelerate losses while triggering repayment demands from lenders.

Reports indicate that Situational Awareness had borrowed tens of billions of dollars from major Wall Street banks while expanding positions tied to artificial intelligence. As prices declined, lenders reportedly required reductions in borrowing, forcing the fund to dispose of assets quickly.

The New York Times reported that investor materials previously stated the fund would place no limits on concentration or leverage, allowing substantial flexibility in constructing its portfolio. Those characteristics became central once AI-related valuations weakened.

Some investors nevertheless expressed continued support for the firm’s longer-term investment thesis. John Pfeffer, identified as an investor since the fund’s launch, described leverage as the principal weakness while expressing relief that the firm remained operational after the restructuring.

Others have suggested that much of the remaining value now rests in private investments, particularly Anthropic. Reports have indicated that the company’s holding represented roughly one-fifth of the fund’s assets, although private valuations remain more difficult to verify than publicly traded securities.

The developments have also drawn comparisons with previous periods when highly leveraged hedge funds expanded rapidly before encountering sudden market reversals. References have been made to Long-Term Capital Management, whose collapse in 1998 became one of the defining examples of leverage amplifying investment losses.
