OpenAI Brings ChatGPT Go to India: A Budget-Friendly AI Subscription

OpenAI has made a big move in India by launching a new subscription tier for ChatGPT. Called ChatGPT Go, this plan comes at a pocket-friendly price of ₹399 per month ($4.60) — a significant drop from the ₹1,999 ($23) price tag of the ChatGPT Plus plan. With India being one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets, this new offering signals the company’s intent to deepen its presence in the country.

Why India, Why Now?

India has quickly become OpenAI’s second-largest market, according to CEO Sam Altman. The country not only has a massive internet user base of 850 million people, but also ranks #1 globally in ChatGPT app downloads. App analytics firm AppFigures noted that in the past 90 days alone, over 29 million downloads came from India.

Yet, despite this huge adoption, the app only made about $3.6 million in revenue during the same period. The gap between usage and revenue indicates that while Indians love the tool, high subscription prices were a barrier. ChatGPT Go directly addresses this by providing a lower-cost entry point without cutting essential features.

What ChatGPT Go Offers

The Go plan is more than just a cheaper alternative. OpenAI promises 10x more capacity compared to the free tier when it comes to messaging, image generation, and file uploads. In addition, better memory retention will allow for more personalized conversations over time, making the AI feel smarter and more attuned to individual users.

Nick Turley, VP at OpenAI and head of ChatGPT, explained:

“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We’re rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries.”

For Indian users, this means near-Plus level functionality at just one-fifth the cost.

Local Currency & UPI Payments: A Smart Move

Just a few days before this launch, OpenAI enabled local currency pricing for all its plans. With ChatGPT Go, the company is going a step further by also allowing UPI payments, India’s widely adopted digital payment system.

From a conversion standpoint, the Plus plan had become more expensive in India than in other regions, costing around $23 instead of $20 after local currency adjustments. The Go plan, therefore, feels not just affordable, but also tailor-made for the Indian market.

Competing in the Indian AI Race

India’s AI race is heating up. Other players are already experimenting with strategies to capture the country’s massive internet population.

  • Perplexity recently tied up with Airtel to provide free Perplexity Pro subscriptions.

  • Google announced a free AI Pro plan for students in India for a year.

Unlike these freebie-driven strategies, OpenAI is betting that its affordable but not free plan will drive higher conversion rates. The company is clearly confident that ChatGPT’s capabilities are compelling enough for Indian users to pay, as long as the price is within reach.

Learning from India Before Expanding

Interestingly, the ChatGPT Go plan is geo-restricted to India for now. Turley noted that OpenAI will collect feedback from Indian users before rolling it out in other countries. This approach underscores how important India has become in OpenAI’s global roadmap — not just as a consumer market, but as a testing ground for innovation.

The Bigger Picture: 700 Million Users and Growing

OpenAI is not slowing down. Last month, Turley revealed that ChatGPT now has over 700 million weekly users worldwide, up from 500 million in March. The addition of an updated image generator earlier this year has further fueled growth, especially in India where visual content creation is in high demand.

By lowering the subscription barrier, OpenAI hopes to turn India’s massive free user base into paying subscribers, setting the stage for stronger monetization worldwide.

Conclusion

With the launch of ChatGPT Go at ₹399, OpenAI has sent a clear signal: India is central to its global AI strategy. Affordable pricing, UPI payments, and enhanced features make this plan a game-changer for students, professionals, and creators alike. If successful, the move could not only supercharge OpenAI’s revenue in India but also shape how AI services are priced and packaged in other emerging markets.
