New Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch will be unveiled very soon

If you’re in the market for a new smartwatch, you might want to put your wallet away and wait just a little longer. Samsung is reportedly planning to announce the Gear S3, the successor to the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic the company launched last year.

According SamMobile, the Gear S3 will retain the Gear S2’s round display and rotating bezel. The watch itself will likely receive a design revamp, although it may simply be slimmer and more streamlined.

Not that there would be anything wrong with that. The Gear S2, as Mashable chief correspondent Lance Ulanoff said in his review, is the best round smartwatch on the market and possibly the best non-Apple Watch smartwatch available.  The Gear S3 will reportedly retain the Gear S2’s round display and rotating bezel.

The Tizen-powered smartwatch is comfortable and the rotating bezel makes navigation a breeze. Samsung is set to announce its next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, at its Unpacked event on Aug. 2. Last year, the company teased the Gear S2 at the Note 5/S6 Edge+ Unpacked launch event and then formally unveiled it a few weeks later at IFA. It’s very possible Samsung will go with the same approach. IFA begins on Sept. 2 and runs through Sept. 7.

SwiftKey bug leaked emails and other personal information

tech this week swipe

People use SwiftKey because it helps predict the words they’re trying to type, and usually, the service works pretty well. However, over the past week, some users reported that their keyboards were populating with other people’s email addresses and searched phrases. The bug relates back to SwiftKey’s cloud sync service, which has since been suspended.

The incorrect predictions spawned multiple Reddit threads. In one, an English speaker was getting someone else’s German suggestions; in another, someone received NSFW porn search suggestions.

Following user reports, SwiftKey took syncing and backups down. The company released an official statement today that doesn’t detail the bug but clarifies that it “did not pose a security issue.” SwiftKey said it’ll continue to update its blog as more information is released.

If You Think Deleted Whatsapp Chats Can’t Be Recovered, You’re Wrong!

tech this week whatsapp

Yes, If you really think that once you delete your Whatsapp chats, it cannot be recovered? Well, Jonathan Zdziarski has some different idea. Popular third-party chat app WhatsApp is leaving a “forensic trace” of every supposedly deleted chat log, meaning anyone with access to your smartphone or another device connected through the cloud could potentially access data from the app.

Deleting, archiving or clearing your WhatsApp chats does not necessarily mean that they’re getting thoroughly deleted, says forensic scientist and iOS security researcher Jonathan Zdziarski.

Zdziarski said, “To test, I installed the app and started a few different threads. I then archived some, cleared, some, and deleted some threads. I made a second backup after running the ‘Clear All Chats’ function in WhatsApp. None of these deletions or archival options made any difference in how deleted records were preserved. In all cases, the deleted SQLite records remained intact in the database.”

For those using WhatsApp on iPhone, the issue of their data privacy is even more pronounced. Zdziarski said during a backup, WhatsApp‘s chat database gets copied to users’ iCloud backup (on desktop as well) from the iPhone. This then leaves a user’s WhatsApp data open to law enforcement warrants. So next time you delete the chats, remember- They’ll be back!

Xiaomi takes on the MacBook with the $750 “Mi Notebook Air”

tech this week xiaomiOvernight, the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi announced that it’s jumping into the laptop market with the launch of the definitely-not-MacBook-inspired Mi Notebook Air. For now, the Windows 10 devices only have a release date in China. The 13.3-inch version is about $750 (RMB 4999) and has a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-6200U (Turbo up to 2.7GHz), 8GB of DDR4 RAM, an Nvidia Geforce 940MX, a 256GB PCIe SSD with a factory expandable SATA SSD slot, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi. The 13-inch version measures 309.6mm x 210.9mm x 14.8mm (12.18″ × 8.3″ × 0.58″) and weighs 2.82 pounds (1.28kg). Xiaomi is claiming a “9.5 hour” battery life.

If you’re looking for something a little smaller, there’s the $525 (RMB 3499) 12.5-inch model. That version has an Intel Core M3 with integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi. The device weighs (1.07kg), measures 292 x 202 x 12.9mm (11.5″ × 7.95″ × 0.51″), and has a claimed “11.5 hours” battery life.

Both devices have one USB Type-C port for charging, 2 USB 3.0 Type-A ports, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack. The aluminum body comes in gold and silver, and there’s a backlit keyboard. Manufacturing duties for the Mi Notebook Air are handled by Inventec and Wistron. The outside is absolutely devoid of logos, while the inside follows the MacBook layout pretty closely other than the body-colored keyboard.

The move into the struggling laptop market is an interesting one for Xiaomi. Xiaomi’s usual strategy is to make money with apps and services on its MIUI Android ROM. There isn’t much in the way of Xiaomi services for Windows 10, though. The devices do have “Mi Sync” software, which presumably will pull down some phone data. The laptop can also be paired to a Mi Band fitness band, so it will automatically unlock when the wearer is near, Apple Watch style.

Xiaomi isn’t the first smartphone maker to make the jump to notebooks. Xiaomi’s Chinese rival Huawei introduced the MateBook earlier this year. The 2-in-1 Surface clone marked the Huawei’s first foray into larger mobile devices, but it featured little that made it stand out from the crowd. We’ll have to see if Xiaomi can do better.

The Mi Notebook Air ships in China on August 2. There’s no word on an international release, but the laptop market seems a little less litigious than the smartphone market, so maybe we’ll see a wider release someday.

Apple sold its billionth iPhone last week

tech this week iphoneiPhone sales may have declined for the quarter, but Apple’s still posting big numbers in the smartphone arena. During an employee meeting in Cupertino this morning, Apple’s CEO announced that the company moved its one-billionth phone last week.

“We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products that make a difference,” Cook said, holding number one billion aloft for the crowd, during a not especially understated address. “Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day.”

The news comes a little over two years after Apple was reported to have sold iPhone number 500 million — a milestone it passed without much notice nearly seven years after the launch of the company’s first handset.
