Object Storage vs. Block Storage: What’s the Difference?

30 September 2017, India:

Visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk has set his eyes to create a revolutionary change in traveling across the globe. With his new concept, you can travel the world under 30 mins. Yes, 30 mins! “If we are going to places like Mars, why not Earth?” Musk said Friday at the 68th International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia.

SpaceX is developing a giant reusable rocketship for those missions called BFR, or Big Falcon Rocket. (Inside the company, it’s nicknamed the “Big F—ing Rocket.” It plans to start building the first one by the middle of next year. The BFR will have space for 150 tons of cargo, compared to Falcon Heavy’s 30 tons, and will still be fully reusable.

With BFR, you can travel from New York to Shanghai in 39 minutes flat. Los Angeles to New York, or Los Angeles to Honolulu in 25 minutes. London to Dubai in 29 minutes. In an Instagram post after the presentation, Musk said the cost per seat “should be about the same as full fare economy in an aircraft.”

This proposed method of Earth-city-to-Earth-city travel would be, by far, the fastest ever created by humanity. The ship would reach a speed of about 18,000 miles per hour at its peak, Musk said, which is more than an order of magnitude faster than the Concorde.

Musk, 46, has a net worth of more than $20 billion and has said in the past he’d use his own personal assets to help fund his vision. Musk said that SpaceX, which has launched 13 rockets so far this year, aims to complete 30 missions for customers next year. SpaceX has many commercial satellite operators as customers, and the revenue from those contracts will help fund the development of BFR, which will also help set up a base on the Moon.
