With the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, masks have become a part of everyone’s attire. But, not everyone wears masks that are safe and are COVID-19 effective. Surgical mask, ordinary cloth masks are the most common. At the same time, companies are innovating in the same. One such company is LG that has recently showcased a new high-tech smart mask.
Features of the high-tech smart mask
The mask truly is high-tech. It packs the “High-Efficiency Particulate Air” filter, also known as HEPA. The filter is hospital-grade and makes the breathable air very clean. To help with the breathing part, there are also battery powered fans that assist the user. LG says that the mask will allow its users to live a healthier and hygenic lifestyle.
Is it effective against the COVID?
Well, there is no official word from LG regarding the particular question, and therefore we can’t be sure. Janet Baseman, professor of public health at University of Washington said, “If this mask were to be marketed as a protection against COVID, I would want to see data on its effectiveness for the wearer and also its effectiveness at limiting transmission of respiratory droplets to others,”
LG says they are currently conducting tests on the effectiveness of the mask against COVID and will let the users know once the results are out. Since there are no results on the performance of the mask against the N95, buyers should wait for some time.
N95 masks protect both users without COVID from intaking the virus and with COVID from exhaling it. So, it will be an essential thing to see if LG’s mask will work both ways. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control masks with valves “do not prevent the person wearing the mask from transmitting COVID-19 to others.”
LG hasn’t yet told us about the pricing or weight of the mask. These details are supposed to be out within the first half of September.
