25March, 2016, USA: 3D technology’s fever is rising high these days, with almost every segment opting for this technology. The newest entry to the list is the pharmaceutical industry. So far, a company called Aprecia Pharamceuticals has produced the only 3D printed drug to be approved by the FDA. This week, Aprecia is also becoming the first company to make their 3D printed drug, Spritam, available to the consumers in the United States, reported digitaltrends.

However, there are many other pharmaceutical companies that have been trying hard with the 3D technology and almost achieved success with it. But Spritam is the first medicine that has cleared the research phase and has hit the market with FDA approval. The medicine is now available to US patients who have been suffering from seizures.

In order to develop the 3D printed drug, Aprecia has made a most of a 3D printing technology called powderbed inkjet printing that enabled the company to manufacture 3D tablets that dissolve immediately. With the instant dissoluble feature, the tablet becomes an easy intake for patients, especially the elderly ones.

Speaking about the development, Don Wetherhold, CEO, Apercia, told, “Spritam is designed to transform what it is like to take epilepsy medication, and is the first in a line of products we are developing to provide patients and their caregivers with additional treatment options.”
